Chukchi Tent

For the Chukchi Inuit in Siberia, gifts symbolize the prosperity and affluence of their community. Thus, wealth is generated by generously distributing gifts. A special mechanism has been devised to institutionalize and ritualize the act of giving. The Chukchi mount a wheel decorated with gifts on the masts of their tents. They rotate the mast from inside the tent to make the wheel whirl around. It is important to turn the wheel as fast as possible to make the gifts fall off. Its direction follows the course of the sun. The mast itself is decorated with walrus heads and paddles painted with fishing scenes.
